NB It's a good idea to try accessing a site at different times of day to be sure of a reliable connection before signing up. Net congestion affects some routes so badly they're unusable and some servers are slower than others. It's a real pain changing to another email service after you have told everybody your new address. You have been warned!
MauiMail don't give you a new web-based account they let you check your existing POP3 mail from a web page. Just type in your email address, POP3 server name and password.
iName offer both web-based and remailing free email services. Choose from over 100 E-mail address domains, including usa.com, europe.com, doctor.com, techie.com, engineer.com, and cheerful.com.
Hotmail offer web-based free email accounts. Your email address would be your.name@hotmail.com. Owned by Microsoft.
AmExMail will be discontinuing service as of May 31, 2002. To keep your current email account and messages with USA.NET, you must purchase service by May 31, 2002. USA.NET is offering current AmExMail customers an introductory rate of $29.99 for the first year of service.
Yahoo! Mail is one of the best free mail providers around. Your free email address would be your.name@yahoo.com.
LycosMail, free email services from the Lycos search engine. They're trying to push paid-for services (which may be good value for money as you get access to a proper SMTP/POP mail server). To register for free email click on the small white Sign up button at the top of the page!
Crosswinds are currently providing both free email and unlimited webspace to over 1.4 million registered users.
You can have a free email account from My Own Email which is readable via the web. Choose any one of 200 different domain names for your address. For $1/month they will remail to any address you want.
POP3 free email
Although in some ways less convenient than web-based free email services, POP mail has one major advantage. Clicking on an email link on a web page starts your browser email software - now you can actually send an email! (Which you can't with web-based mail services.)
Offer free personal POP3 email accounts. Your free email address would be your.name@softhome.net. They also offer paid-for web hosting & business email services.
Free remailers
Amongst the free email facilities Bigfoot provide are: remailing, distribution (copying emails to up to 5 addresses) and filtering. Your free email address would be your.name@bigfoot.com. Other paid-for services are offered.
