JavaScript and
CGI - what's the difference?
They can both offer an element of
interactivity to your web pages, for instance by putting
a feedback form on a page. CGI scripts run on the web
hosting server whereas JavaScript runs in the browser on
the visitors PC. Anybody can have JavaScript enriched
pages on their website. The scripts are just added to the
HTML for each page. CGI scripts are more powerful than
JavaScript (you can use them to generate pages
"on-the-fly" for instance). If you want to run
a CGI script however your website hosting company needs
to give you a "CGI bin". This is a bit risky
for them - if your script crashes it will take down other
sites on the server, not just yours. For this reason many
hosts don't allow CGI scripts. Others may insist on
pre-vetting any scripts you want to run. Most CGI scripts
are written in a language called Perl.
Website
Abstraction
The Website Abstraction site features over 300+
free scripts, JavaScript tutorials, and a JS forum
where developers from all over can meet and discuss
their script projects.
Cut'N'Paste JavaScript (or JScript if you're of the MS persuasion!)
Most modern browsers support
JavaScript. Whilst it's not quite as powerful as
script running at the server, JavaScript can
certainly allow you more control over how your pages
appear. You can, for instance, get scripts to display
and validate forms which can then be emailed to you.
JavaScript can also be used to make a browser preload
pages - make your website look really fast!
The
JavaScript Source
Is another excellent source of
JavaScripts which can be easily pasted into the HTML
of your own web pages.
Free CGI Scripts
Matt's Script Archive has been
around for ages and has loads of CGI scripts
available for free. OK if you can persuade your host
to let you run scripts on their server.
CGI
City
CGI city has lots of information
and tutorials about CGI scripts, together with links
to lots of other websites about CGI scripting.
Scriptsearch
This site reckons to be the biggest
script archive on the net. Scripts cover Perl,
VBScript and AppleScript.
The
Perl archive
The perl archive contains a vast
number (about 800!) of CGI scripts, all available for
download.
Dave's
Perl Page
Dave has a nice
collection of free CGI scripts written in Perl.
